CJ Tailgate Conversion ![]() The reason for a CJ tailgate is simple - it works like a bench or table and won't swing shut if the Jeep isn't level. "JEEP" in big letters across the back is pretty cool too. The first step was to gather all the right parts. I found the tailgate by posting a "wanted" ad on the Pirate4x4 BBS. Someone had one gathering dust in their garage that I got for a fair price. A few minor repairs, some paint and all was well. The hardware all came from the dealer. All those bolts, washers, brackets and cables added up fast - to about $150! I got the seal from JCWhitney for about $40. Installation required two small fabrication projects: brackets to hold the upper cables, and backing plates for the hinges. I made the brackets for the cables out of 1" angle and welded them to the roll cage feet. The hinge mounts are harder - one way or another you will have to get inside the tub below the tailgate. It's a sealed space approximately 2x4" in size. Access from the bottom is blocked be the rear crossmember. From the rear by the gas tank. Plan on dropping the tank and doing some cutting. I made two 1x2" plates with nuts welded to the back side to bolt into. I already had holes cut because of the gas tank project. As an insult to CJ owners everywhere, I elected to mount the hinges "upside down". It's my opinion that the door swings on a better arc this way. I get a lot of questions about how it's held closed. To that I say.... take a Jeep history field trip and go look at a CJ. No - I cannot open the door from the outside if the top is on. I hope that answers all the questions I've been getting. If not, there are a few more photos in this index Or send me an email.
